Estimate for 2026. The lump-sum birth allowance is 500,000 JPY per baby (paid to anyone in public health insurance). Maternity allowance and childcare-leave benefit require employee insurance (Shakai Hoken / employment insurance). Actual amounts depend on your remuneration history and leave dates.
The three main benefits
- Lump-sum birth allowance (shussan ikuji ichijikin): 500,000 JPY per baby. Paid to anyone enrolled in public health insurance (employee or NHI). Usually paid directly to the hospital (direct-payment system).
- Maternity allowance (shussan teate-kin): about two-thirds of your daily wage during maternity leave (42 days before + 56 days after birth). Employee health insurance only.
- Childcare-leave benefit (ikuji kyugyo kyufukin): 67% of wage for the first 180 days of childcare leave, then 50%. Requires employment insurance.
FAQ
- Q. Do foreigners get the 500,000 JPY lump sum?
- Yes — it’s tied to health-insurance enrolment, not nationality. If you or your spouse is in Japanese public health insurance, you receive it. It also applies to stillbirth/miscarriage after 85 days.
- Q. I’m self-employed (NHI). What do I get?
- You receive the 500,000 JPY lump sum, but National Health Insurance does not pay the maternity allowance, and you need employment insurance for the childcare-leave benefit. Many municipalities add their own support — check your city office.
- Q. What about child allowance after birth?
- Monthly child allowance (jido teate) continues until high-school age. This calculator covers the one-time and leave-period benefits around the birth itself.
Estimate for 2026. Maternity and childcare-leave benefits depend on your standard remuneration and leave dates. See the Japanese version and the childcare-benefits guide for details.
