When you leave Japan, you can claim a lump-sum from the National Pension and Employees' Pension if you contributed ≥6 months. This tool estimates the gross amount, the 20.42% withholding, and the typical refund obtainable through filing.

※ The Employees' Pension portion is taxed as retirement income (退職所得). When filed via a Tax Representative after departure, the retirement income deduction (40万/year up to 20 yrs, 70万/year after) usually wipes out the tax, refunding most of the 20.42% withholding. National Pension portion is not taxed.

- Withholding: 20.42% on Kosei portion only (National Pension is tax-free)
- Refund: file Form 退職所得の選択課税申告書 via Tax Representative
注釈
If you take a lump-sum withdrawal, your contribution months are erased and cannot be reused for future Japanese pension entitlement. If you may return to Japan, consider not withdrawing—Japan has totalization agreements with many countries (US, Germany, Korea, etc.) that allow combining periods abroad.
